Scratching the surface of stress relief advice
By Eric Heyl TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Relax, all you tension-toting sillies. The lowdown on uptight is that stress doesn't have to ruin your life.
Or at least that's the lowdown from Eva Selhub of the Mind/Body Medical Institute in Boston. She was consulted by USA Today this week on ways to reduce stress after the newspaper reported the affliction is responsible for triggering up to 90 percent of all doctor visits.
At first glance, Selhub's advice appears simple and sensible. But is it? Let's peer below the surface of her suggestions, reprinted here in boldface:
Get regular exercise.

Just don't focus on how you look in that ill-fitting spandex,
or wonder if people at the gym are repulsed by the grotesque belly
you've sported for years. Try to enjoy a daily lunchtime workout
without worrying about the potential for pulled ligaments, torn
tendons or an all-out cardiac event as you push yourself to your
painful, stress-reducing physical limits.
Find the time to pray or meditate.
How to do that when there's often not a spare second in your stressful
day? You may have to drastically reduce or entirely eliminate another
activity, such as your exercise regimen.
Ask for help when demands pile up.
If that crushing research project for the conceptual integrated
services department is proving too daunting, request some assistance
from your supervisors. Don't be too upset when they suggest that
maybe you wouldn't be so overwhelmed if you cut out those lengthy
lunchtime workouts and worked a little harder on your project.
Develop a support network of friends and family members.
Just don't be surprised if your conversations with members of
your support network go something like this:
"Hi, Dad, I'm feeling a little stressed out. Can we talk for a
couple of minutes?"
"I'd love to chat, son, but I'm on my way out the door to play
racquetball. I'm feeling so much more relaxed since I started getting
regular exercise."
"Can I talk to Mom then?"
"She's at yoga class. You know, she's become incredibly centered
since she began mediating. What a gal, your mom."
"Well, then, is Johnny -- "
"Don't even ask about your brother. He hasn't gotten up before noon since he lost his job. I feel bad for him, but in this unsettled job climate, you just can't keep complaining to your supervisors that you're overburdened."
Look at unavoidable stress as an opportunity for growth.
Particularly if you, like Selhub, are in a position to grow professionally or financially by offering oversimplified advice to a perpetually stressed society.
